Beyond Brighton Pier, April 2008
March 2008
Project Director, Colin Ledwith presented at 'Beyond Brighton Pier', a one-day conference by Brighton & Hove City Council, Brighton Festival and Dome, Brighton & Hove Museums Service and Theatre Royal Brighton. Funded by SEEDA, the event was organised by Tourism South East.
Beyond Brighton Pier was aimed at Brighton and Hove's existing creative community partnerships, and was an attempt to articulate Brighton and Hove's existing cultural offer and explore how a shared cultural vision could drive and develop the city in the future. Issues examined included how Brighton and Hove measure up against the offer from other UK cultural destinations including London's Sultan's Elephant, Liverpool's City of Culture, Manchester International's Monkey Opera and the sheer cultural tsunami of the Edinburgh Festival. The key issue; if Brighton and Hove is to continue to compete in an increasingly competitive cultural climate, then a new approach to cultural entrepreneurial incubation is required.
Speakers included: Robyn Archer: writer, Artistic Director and public arts advocate; Simon Calder: travel editor, the Independent and BBC broadcaster; Michael Lynch: Chief Executive Officer at the South Bank Centre; Stephen Powell: British Theatre Guide Creative Director of Lanternhouse International, and Colin Ledwith of Futurecity.
