In 2004, Futurecity ran a competition with the Royal British Society of Sculptors to commission a young artist to produce a focal work for the New River Village development. The St James Sculpture Bursary was won by young British sculptor, Ed Goolden, assistant to Sir Anthony Caro.

Trajectory consists of a series of white interlocking rectangular columns made of box section steel treated with a rust proof hot zinc spray and with mirrored interior panels. It weighs 3 tonnes and at over 8m in height is currently the largest sculpture in the St James Group's collection.
