Futurecity were appointed by Creative Partnerships in 2006 to lead a major culture and regeneration project in the Thames Gateway region. Billboard Project is a unique Thames Gateway regeneration project that showcases Futurecity's dynamic approach to arts and cultural innovation.
Under the direction of Futurecity and in collaboration with AOC Architects, Atelier One Engineers and Tyler Hayhurst Architects, a post-box red, 16 ton, 10 metre long, state of the art 'Media Lab' (based on the construction and form of a sea container) was produced. The 'Billboard Lab' literally metamorphoses into a fully equipped film studio, a consultation space, a project workshop and a project exhibition space. The resulting high quality mix of 'pimp my ride' and 'transformer' was launched at Averley School in Thurrock in January 2007. The Lab then moved to Basildon and Southend in the Thames Gateway region.
The Lab arrived at Tate Modern in June 2007 to take part in the Architecture Foundation's DEBATE LONDON, hosting the youth debate 'Generation London'. Young people from London's schools used the Lab to debate their own thoughts on the changes to London with key decision makers.
