For the redevelopment of Snow Hill in Birmingham, Ballymore Group commissioned Futurecity to lead a major artist commission competition: a landmark artwork 'beacon of culture' for the city.
Landmark Snow Hill will become a high profile, unique and easily recognisable feature of Birmingham supported by a menu of cultural outputs and high quality public realm offered as part of the Snow Hill business district. It will join and enrich the strong cultural offer of the city: Brindley Place for instance combines retail, restaurant and commercial mixes with the internationally renowned Ikon Gallery at the centre, and Urban Splash's conversion of the 'Rotunda' will place a major media artwork at the top of the tower as part of the scheme by Glen Howells Architects. Landmark Snow Hill will reinforce and extend this cultural vision of Birmingham's thriving arts and architecture led regeneration scene, placing a beacon artwork at the centre of the city.
A short list of seven highly regarded international practices were approached to develop proposal concepts for Landmark Snow Hill: Art + Com, Mark & Stephen Beasley, Liam Gillick, Charles Hadcock, Mark Titchner, Keith Wilson and Richard Woods. An advisory panel comprising Birmingham City Council, Arts Council England, Arts & Business, University Central England, and IKON gallery in partnership with the key stakeholders in the project have contributed to the final proposal selection.
The commissioned artwork is due to be sited on the Snow Hill site early 2010.
