Cultural Masterplan
Southampton
2007
CLIENT:City Lofts
PARTNERS:
Assael Architects
Glen Howells Architects
The development comprises two residential towers directly connected to the ACE and Southampton funded 'SNAC' cultural centre. Futurecity was appointed by the client to develop a cultural strategy designed to connect the work of the residential architects Assael, the cultural centre architects Glen Howells and the 4 cultural partners/operators under one vision, offering residents and the public direct access to a unified cultural experience.
The SNAC building combines residential and cultural use, providing a new arts centre for Southampton and providing a new home for four of the city's most prestigious arts organisations in one building, including the John Hansard gallery, the Nuffield Theatre and Asian Eye. The building is central to the regeneration plans for Southampton as a culturally diverse city. As part of our research we have worked with the City of Southampton, ACE, the University and other cultural and political organisations to help plan for the developments eventual commercial and cultural success. The cultural strategy also includes the curation of a light-based, kinetic, public art commission from Esther Rowlinson.
