Cultural sponsorship
New River Village, Hornsey, London
2003 - ongoing
CLIENT:St James Homes
PARTNERS:
Royal Academy of Arts
The project involved persuading the client to convert the Hornsey Waterworks Pumphouse into a contemporary gallery space to show work by students of the Royal Academy Schools. This unique sponsorship between St James Homes and the Royal Academy Schools culminated in a package of facilities including 1,500 sq ft of gallery space, storage, access for large artworks, a piazza gallery space for sculpture and a purpose-built artist's studio on the first floor.
The facilities were supported by a brokered deal, which provides 5-year funding programme for exhibitions, funding for the gallery space, equipment, utilities and security. The Royal Academy appointed Michael Petry, director of MOCA London to curate the exhibition programme who has shown the work of RA students alongside artists including Cornelia Parker, Jane Simpson and Richard Wilson.
The sponsorship has provided both new and existing communities of Haringey with a new cultural asset and has supported the 'Heartlands' initiative by creating a cultural quarter for the area. In 2006, the success of the Gallery resulted in the occupation of the adjacent space in the building by the 'Pumphouse Restaurant'.
