8 July - 14 September, 2009
Exhibited at 100% Design, Earls Court, London, 24-27 September 2009
Skystation is a unique public sculptural seating project resulting from an innovative interdisciplinary collaboration between artist Peter Newman and cultural agency Futurecity. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s LC4 Chaise Longue, the Skystation is a circular outdoor seat with contours intended to fit the human form. Skystation is a robust and elegant sculptural form, able to provide seating for up to 12 people, with a proven track record of use in public spaces. It comes as a signed and numbered edition of 100 sculptures, available in a range of colours.
100 Skystations will be available for 100 sitespecific locations across the world, from cities and towns, to malls and parks, as part of an international public art project entitled ‘100 Places’. The first permanent installation of Skystation will take place in Cambridge in 2009. Commissioned by Miller Homes, Skystation will provide the sculptural centrepiece of a community-focused public arts project for George Nuttall Close park.
Skystation was successfully launched at the Hayward Gallery at London’s South Bank in July 2009, where it’s prototype was exhibited throughout the summer as part of Peter Newman’s solo exhibition. Skystation has also been exhibited in Trafalgar Square, St Mary Axe (Lloyds Building), Canary Wharf and at the New Art Centre sculpture park.
