CLIENT:Miller Homes Ltd
Futurecity are proud to have been appointed as cultural consultants on the
Miller Homes site, George Nuttall Close in Cambridge. This site not only
offers an exciting opportunity for artists to work with the rich heritage
of Cambridge, but also offers future residents and the community the
opportunity to engage with public art in a new and innovative way.
For this public art commission Futurecity have worked with Miller Homes
on identifying a key site, which will have maximum impact for residents
and where public artwork could enhance and benefit its surroundings.
As such both Futurecity and Miller Homes have decided to focus their
attention on the George Nuttall Park site, which will eventually be adopted
by Cambridge City Council. As a public destination, with landscaping
potential, Futurecity found this the ideal location for a piece of
interactive contemporary public art.
Futurecity propose working with Peter Newman, a key artist of international
repute to create a bespoke artist-designed seating that will enhance and
reflect its surroundings, whilst being innovative and contemporary. This
project is called Skystation and it will bring an exciting world-class
artwork to the area, whilst having a public engagement plan to allow
residents and the community to interact with the work, possibly extending
this into a virtual, international project. The potential of this public
art project, could have repercussions throughout the local area, making the
George Nuttall Park into a new destination point for Cambridge.
The new Miller Homes development is a cluster of leafy suburban houses,
forming the outskirts of Cambridge City Centre and where a majority of young
professionals and young families live and work in Cambridge City Centre.
Access to this site is from Milton Road, from the A10, 2.7 miles from
Cambridge Railway station. The George Nuttall Park area is one of the only
open green spaces, other than the nearby playing fields. As such it will
become a key place for families to play and people to walk their dogs,
picnic and relax in the summer, while children play on the nearby children’s
play area.
Miller Homes are building 182 units, a mixture of houses and flats, which
will have significant impact on the usage of this park. As such it is key
for this open green space to become a place of recreation and an attractive
place to be part of.
