Mayfair Chambers

Bespoke gates and railings were commissioned for Mayfair Chambers to create a refined arrival marker for the seven-storey residential building in central London. Conceived as an embedded artwork, the commission enhances the building’s street presence while remaining sensitive to its architectural context and surrounding streetscape.

Following a selection process, Richard Galpin was appointed to develop the design. Drawing on his wider studio practice, Galpin explored themes of fragmentation, geometry and the abstracted language of the city, translating these ideas into a functional architectural element.

The design was informed by research into local architectural details, historic Mayfair railings and the material palette of the surrounding area. Galpin developed a layered, crystalline composition that operates both as a secure boundary and as a sculptural intervention, creating subtle shifts in depth, veiling and perspective as the gates are approached.

Working closely with the project team, the artist ensured the gates and railings were fully integrated into the façade, balancing craftsmanship, durability and visual presence. The resulting commission adds a quiet but distinctive layer to the building - enriching the everyday experience of arrival through material, form and detail.
