From Power Station to Cultural Engine

20 August 2026

It is over 14 years since Futurecity developed a culture-led placemaking vision for Battersea Power Station, one of London’s most iconic industrial landmarks, now entering consultation on the future phases of its development.

Battersea Power Station has now attracted 40 million visitors and 170 retail, hospitality and leisure venues; it is home to Apple’s UK headquarters and is expanding its cultural and events programme.

Futurecity positioned the Power Station as a cultural anchor on the south bank of the Thames and the driver for Nine Elms, one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects. At the heart of this transformation, Futurecity developed a ‘Creative District’ concept and ‘Nine for Nine Elms’ Cultural Principles for the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Wandsworth.

We developed individual cultural, place and public art strategies for ten property developments across the district: Battersea Power Station, Riverlight, New Covent Garden Market, One Nine Elms, Albert Embankment, Keybridge House, 101 Prince of Wales Drive, Battersea Park Road, the Royal College of Art and Embassy Gardens.

The cultural legacy and influence of Futurecity’s strategic, curatorial and brokering work is now visible across Nine Elms. World Heart Beat has established a music academy and concert venue at Embassy Gardens. Matt’s Gallery has made Nine Elms its permanent home. The Royal College of Art has expanded its Battersea campus. Artists and artworks have been embedded into the new Northern Line Underground stations.

The Berkeley group’s 3 residential developments, Riverlight, 101 Prince of Wales and Albert Embankment, have provided cultural space and major art commissions built around a strong relationship with the Royal College of Art, while Keybridge House has the areas larges public artwork by artist Tom Price.
