Futurecity has been appointed as lead curator and gallery director of The Gallery at Foyles—a 1,300 sqft exhibition space within the new Foyles flagship bookshop at 107 Charing Cross Road. Situated on the fifth floor of the redesigned building, the gallery will serve as a cultural anchor for the store’s wider creative programme, positioning art at the heart of a landmark London literary institution.
Futurecity has worked closely with Foyles since 2012, advising on the cultural strategy for the new building, a former Central Saint Martins site reimagined by architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands as a “bookshop for the 21st century.” The gallery has been designed by interior specialists lustedgreen and will host a year-round programme of high-profile contemporary art exhibitions, artist talks, and cross-disciplinary events that reflect Foyles’ extraordinary literary, musical and cultural heritage.
Launching the gallery on 24 June 2014 will be Turner Prize nominee and Central Saint Martins alumnus Mark Titchner, who returns to the very floor where he once studied to create a new site-specific artwork. Known for his striking text-based installations, Titchner’s exhibition will explore the building’s cultural legacy and the intersection of thought, language and image—a perfect fit for a gallery situated within one of the UK’s most iconic bookshops.
The gallery will form part of a wider cultural hub at Foyles, which includes the new Café at Foyles by Leafi, and a 200-seat auditorium for events, performances and talks.
