Central to Eveleigh

Futurecity’s Sydney office was commissioned by UrbanGrowth NSW to deliver a Creative Placemaking Strategy for the Central to Eveleigh Urban Transformation and Transport Project—a major renewal initiative covering 50 hectares of government-owned land spanning Central to Erskineville Stations.

Set within a network of historically rich and culturally vibrant neighbourhoods, the project required a curatorial vision to shape the long-term transformation of key precincts including North Eveleigh, Waterloo and Redfern Station.

Futurecity began with a detailed audit of planning documents, masterplans, and policies, followed by interviews with project stakeholders and local cultural leaders. Our team conducted cultural mapping, a heritage and trends analysis, and facilitated workshops with a dedicated Creative Placemaking Advisory Group to co-develop a set of cultural principles and a shared vision for the site.

The final strategy functioned as both a visionary and practical guide, identifying cultural character zones, curatorial themes, and opportunities for activation across the precincts. It embedded local Indigenous stories, celebrated community identities, and aligned with city and state-level planning frameworks.

The strategy’s core aim was to animate the site’s histories, foster a strong sense of place, and guide future development through a cultural lens—ensuring Central to Eveleigh grows as a connected, creative, and inclusive part of Sydney’s urban future.
