Dinner

Unveiled in the Heritage Centre at Ram Quarter in May 2025, Gabie’s installation reimagines a 1948 staff Christmas dinner as a luminous and evocative tribute both to the people who worked at Young’s in 1948 and to those who worked on the site’s modern redevelopment into Ram Quarter.

Faithfully recreated, the new dinner took place in 2017, with those in the photograph exactly copying the position of their counterparts in the original image; the dinner was held in the very same room in Wandsworth Town Hall where the original dinner had taken place.

The photograph of the recreated dinner was turned into a large 1.5-metre by 3-metre lightbox, now displayed in the Heritage Centre at Ram Quarter alongside a copy of the original photograph.

Nevile Gabie commented: “I was just astounded by the sheer amount of material in the archive and how interesting it was. The thing that really came across to me was how much Young's was a family. I mean, it was a business, it was a brewery, but it was really a family. That notion of community and family was the thing that I really came away with.”
