Ram Quarter

Ram Quarter is a landmark cultural destination developed by Greenland Group as part of the regeneration of Wandsworth Town Centre. The site is built on the grounds of the former Young’s Brewery where records of brewing date back to at least 1533. It was home to generations of local workers, and stands as a cornerstone of Wandsworth’s industrial and social history.

Futurecity led the development of a cultural strategy, working in close collaboration with EPR Architects and key stakeholders to embed heritage, storytelling, and community engagement into the heart of the development. The vision reconnects the public with the River Wandle, introduces welcoming open spaces for relaxation and leisure, and integrates interactive heritage elements across the site.

Public art commissions by artists Neville Gabie and Tania Kovats respond to the industrial and social legacy of the site. Gabie’s artwork reimagines a 1948 brewery staff Christmas dinner through a contemporary lens. The original photograph was restaged in 2017 in the same room at Wandsworth Town Hall, with participants mirroring the original composition. This image is now displayed as a large illuminated lightbox in Ram Quarter’s Heritage Centre, alongside a copy of the original photograph.

Ram Quarter stands as a model for heritage-led placemaking, where history, community, and contemporary living intersect. It sets a precedent for culturally rich urban development that honours the past while shaping a vibrant, inclusive future for Wandsworth.
