Futurecity was appointed by Carrot Developments to deliver a landmark public art commission as part of the development’s Section 106 obligation. Working in close collaboration with Rolfe Judd Architects, Futurecity curated and managed an embedded art and architecture intervention for a prominent façade within the scheme. Artist Paul Morrison, known for his precise monochromatic graphics and botanical imagery, was selected to develop a work that would be integrated directly into the building’s anodised aluminium cladding.
Morrison created Oxeye, a large-scale image of a cropped oxeye daisy rendered across the façade in black graphic silhouettes. The artwork draws on the artist’s interest in “cognitive landscapes,” using shifts in scale and perspective to create an image that is immediately legible from distance yet increasingly intricate when viewed up close. The graphic treatment wraps around the building, allowing the artwork to read as a continuous visual field.
The image was applied using a specialist matt finish to create sharp contrast with the warm metallic surface of the façade. As light moves across the aluminium panels, the artwork subtly changes in appearance, giving the building a dynamic visual presence within the Clerkenwell streetscape.
