Futurecity was appointed to lead the cultural placemaking strategy for the transformation of Battersea Power Station - one of the most significant regeneration projects in Europe. Working with the development team from 2010, Futurecity developed a vision to embed culture into the heart of the scheme’s identity, transforming this iconic industrial site into a globally recognised creative district.
The Cultural Strategy proposed a series of embedded and temporary interventions across the site’s public realm, foregrounding the site’s industrial heritage and future as a cultural anchor for Nine Elms. The 2014 Public Realm Activation Report built on this with a live commissioning framework including landmark sculptures, seasonal events, and participatory cultural programming.
Key projects included the BPS Chimneys Sculpture - a major permanent commission made from the recycled materials of the original chimneys - and the concept for the Battersea Garden Party, an annual programme of interactive sculpture and family events inspired by the 1948 open-air sculpture exhibition in Battersea Park.
The strategy helped define the cultural spine of the new Nine Elms district, offering a compelling mix of heritage, contemporary creativity, and inclusive design. Battersea Power Station now operates as a major cultural and commercial destination, with public art and placemaking embedded into its public realm from the outset.
