London City Island

On behalf of client Ballymore, Futurecity developed a cultural strategy for a new development on Leamouth Peninsula. The strategy highlighted the area’s cultural offer and unique placement within London and emphasised trails, public spaces and creative space provision.

Futurecity’s Cultural Strategy for London City Island was significant on three levels. Firstly, the interventions described in detail within the document were designed to transform the peninsula into a distinct creative location in its own right. Secondly, the new infrastructure and activity planned on the peninsula could be stitched into existing cultural activity to fashion a new dynamic and highly creative district. Thirdly, the wider area, at the intersection of the Lower Lea Valley and the Thames Gateway will play an increasingly influential role within East London’s creative post-Olympic future.

The Futurecity Strategy proposed that Leamouth Peninsula establish a diverse range of creative elements, such as series of imaginative activity, fitness and heritage trails, to create a unique and genuine creative location.

The Strategy also established an anchor arts partner of national importance that would provide an appropriately inspiring environment and setting. This created the conditions for the arrival of the English National Ballet's new purpose-built rehearsal and education space, which anchors the site and animates it with a wide range of artists and creatives, both as long term tenants and via one-off residencies and projects.
