As part of Futurecity’s cultural strategy for Riverlight, artist Peter Newman was commissioned to create Skystation, a striking piece of functional public art that invites people to pause, look up and experience the city from a different perspective.
Skystation takes the form of a circular, sculptural seat inspired by Le Corbusier’s chaise longue. Its reclining curves are designed to cradle the body and gently tilt the gaze upwards, encouraging a rare moment of contemplation in the urban environment. Positioned on the riverside public realm, the work creates a communal platform for relaxation, sky-gazing and conversation.
Newman’s practice often explores how we relate to our surroundings, particularly the sky as a space of imagination and freedom. At Riverlight, Skystation translates this interest into an accessible and playful encounter with art, integrated seamlessly into the landscape design by Gillespies.
The commission demonstrates how cultural strategy can enrich everyday life in new developments. More than a sculptural landmark, Skystation fosters connection between people and place, offering a shared experience of wonder that anchors Riverlight’s identity as part of the wider Nine Elms neighbourhood.
