Terra Ludi

Terra Ludi is a permanent public art commission by artists Simon & Tom Bloor, integrated into the public landscape at Riverlight - a residential-led development in Nine Elms designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Commissioned by St James as part of a broader cultural strategy developed by Futurecity, the work responds to Wandsworth Council’s ambition to incorporate informal play into the public realm.

The artists created Terra Ludi - a sculptural intervention including a full-size bronze cast of a felled tree, scattered stone outcrops and stepping stones. Designed in collaboration with landscape architects Gillespies, the elements are positioned to invite climbing, resting and imaginative use by people of all ages.

The use of robust natural and cast materials integrates the forms into the wider landscape, while evoking themes of nature, time and transformation.

Terra Ludi reflects an evolving approach to public art - where sculpture, play and placemaking overlap. It contributes to a wider artist-led strategy at Riverlight, which includes works by Peter Newman and Kate Davis & David Moore, embedding creative use and interaction into the development’s everyday experience.
