Ekkhard Altenburger’s The Thames Stone and Negative Fall is a dramatic embedded water sculpture. It visually links Clare Wood’s etching at Bramah House, the locks and weirs of Grosvenor Dock, nearby River Thames and the surrounding architecture at the Grosvenor Waterside development.
The pathway of the river is carved into the stone, with water moving through the eddies in constant motion. The water is fed by a 40,000 litre underground rainwater tank that collects the runoff from the surrounding buildings.
The sculpture was made of Angola black granite meticulously carved in Portugal. Hand finished with rounded water run-offs, the stone masonry was executed in collaboration with the Szerelmey Company.
